I attended the
111th
SCV Annual Reunion
held at the Sheraton Hotel in
New Orleans from August 2nd
to August 6th,
2006. The Reunion was a great success with over 660
registered members, representing over 300 camps, in
attendance. Following are the highlights of the business
conducted...
Elections
Lt. CiC Chris Sullivan was elected
Commander-in-Chief by acclamation at the request of his
opponent, Michael Duminiak and Chief of Staff Ron Casteel was
elected Lt. CiC, also by acclamation at the request of his
opponent Tarry Beasley. Chuck Norred was elected the ATM
Commander, and Chuck McMichael was elected the ATM Councilman.
New
SCV Constitution
The proposed constitution was
approved by an overwhelming number of camps with more than 90%
voting in favor of the new constitution on Friday night, August
4, 2006. One of the more popular provisions of the new
constitution was the establishment of Cadet Membership for young
men not yet 12 years old.
GEC
Appointments
CiC
Chris Sullivan appointed Donald Shelton as the Chief of Staff,
Mark Simpson as the Adjutant-in-Chief, Cecil Fayard as the
Chaplain-in-Chief, Darryl Starnes as the Chief of Heritage
Defense and Burl McCoy as the Judge Advocate-in-Chief.
Cadet
Membership
Cadet membership was established
for males from birth to 12 years of age who are otherwise
eligible for SCV membership. A regular SCV application, with
the word “Cadet” written or printed at the top, will be
submitted along with $10 to General Headquarters, completely
filled out including the Camp’s approval. The GHQ will enter
the young man in the database, assign him a SCV membership
number and all records will be the same as a full member except
that his membership status will be different. The names of
cadet members will not appear on the camp membership roster nor
will they receive the Confederate Veteran magazine. A new cadet
member joining for the year August 1, 2006 through July 31, 2007
will be status
CM06.
Once the young man becomes 12, he will pay his regular dues and
his status will be changed to the appropriate fiscal year which
will make him a full member.
Recruiting
DVD
A recruiting DVD entitled “All But
Their Honor” has been completed and a complimentary copy has
been mailed to Camp Commanders by GHQ. This video debuted at
the 111th
Annual General Reunion in New Orleans. This video is sixteen
minutes in length and a loop can be selected which allows it to
play continuously if the camp wishes to set it up at a Gun Show
or other events where the public is passing by. There are two
additional 30 second long TV spots under the selection of “Ashes
and Graves” which your camp might consider placing on local
cable TV. Additional copies may be purchased from GHQ for
$10.00 with postage and handling included.
Time and Place Committee
The Time and Place Committee
nominated Hot Springs, Arkansas as the host for the 2009 SCV
National Reunion which was approved by the Convention
attendees. The 2007 SCV National Reunion will be hosted by the
Admiral Raphael Semmes Camp 11, Mobile, Alabama, and the 2008
Reunion will be held in Concord, North Carolina. Early
registration for the 2007 National Reunion in Mobile is
available online at
www.scvsemmes.org
Confederate Veteran Magazine
Any photographs or articles
submitted to the Editor-in-Chief for publication in the camp
news section should be sent electronically, if possible, to eic@scv.org
or mailed directly to Frank B. Powell III, 9701 Fonville Road,
Wake Forest, North Carolina 27587. Please remember that the GEC
approved a CV magazine subscription rate of
only
$10.00 per year for libraries and schools when purchased by a
SCV member or camp. Please take advantage of this offer to
ensure your local area is exposed to this fine magazine.
Combined Federal Campaign
The SCV has been approved for the
fourth consecutive year as a Combined Federal Campaign Charity
(CFC). In many locations the CFC is combined with the United
Way and joint fund raising campaigns are conducted during
September and October. If you are a potential CFC donor, I
would like to encourage you to consider assigning a portion of
your contributions to the SCV which is
Charity 0887.
SCV
Credit Card Revenue Sharing
Beginning August 1, 2006 the SCV
national organization will be sharing 25% of the revenue
received from the SCV VISA Card program with the divisions. The
GHQ receives a monthly report from the bank which breaks down
purchases by state based upon the billing address of the card
holder. The checks to the divisions will be made monthly,
quarterly or annually once the amount due to the division is at
least $100. I would like to encourage everyone to apply for a
card. You can request an application from Division Adjutant Hal
Fleming (halfleming@charter.net) or you may request one from the
GHQ.
Dues
Your dues need to be paid by
October 31st.
If you haven’t already done so, would you please take a moment
right now and send your dues in to your camp adjutant. We sure
don’t want your membership to lapse for non payment of dues.
Also, keep in mind that new members are the life blood of our
organization, so be on the constant lookout for prospects.
Invite them or bring them to your next camp meeting or event and
encourage them to become members if they are eligible. If you
haven’t been active in your Camp, I urge to make it your top
priority to become active and to do everything you can to help
your Camp grow and to make it the best Camp in the Missouri
Division. Get active and don’t hide your Southern pride!
Missouri Secession Day Dinner
Please make plans to attend the
Missouri Secession Day Dinner that will be on Saturday, October
28, 2006 at the DAV which is south of Jefferson City and is a
little farther south then Donita’s. Social hour begins at 6:00
PM and dinner begins at 7:00 PM.
Lee/Jackson
Supper
The Lee/Jackson Supper will be on
Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the Lamplighter Inn North in
Springfield, Missouri. There will be an Executive Council and
Staff Meeting of the Missouri Division at 3:30 PM at the
Lamplighter Inn North. Social hour will begin at 5:30 PM and
supper will begin at 6:30 PM. This will be the
200th
Anniversary
of the birth of General Robert E.
Lee. We are fortunate in having Dr. Ed DeVries as our guest
speaker for the evening. The subject of his talk is one of
which he is exceptionally well qualified to speak, with both
wisdom and authority.
Thanksgiving
I would like to wish everyone a
safe and happy Thanksgiving. Let us pause to remember that ours
is a land where we are still free to laugh, dream, hope, and
speak our minds and worship as we please. We have so much to be
thankful for.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
There are so many things to love
about this time of year…the traditions and decorations, time
with friends and family, giving gifts to those we love.
Sometimes, it’s easy to lose sight of the reason behind the
holidays—the birth of our Savior. This season, may you never
lose sight of Jesus. May you find His joy within each carol,
His peace in a busy world, His hope as you look forward to a
brand new year. May His love glow ever brighter within your own
life as it shines into the lives of others.
May
God’s love surround you.
Yours in the Cause,
John Christensen
Missouri Division Commander
